End Kwote

"If you will it, Dude, it is no dream." -Walter Sobchak

“If you will it, Dude, it is no dream.” -Walter Sobchak

The human will. Our way of forcing ourselves to do what we think we never could. Phrases like “You gotta push yourself,” or “mind over matter” characterize how we enforce our will, how we make ourselves to do things.

This quote, from the famous Cohen Brothers film “The Big Lebowski”, is one of those that I think is very applicable to everyday life. “If you will it, Dude, it is no dream” says the boisterous and often non-sensical Walter Sobchak to the spacey and easy-going Jeffrey Lebowski, or, as we know him, the Dude. Though it may seem like Walter is just spouting off, like he normally does, this quote holds a lot more weight than people give it credit for.

Think about it for a minute. If you will it, it is no dream. Think about all the times that you came up a little bit short, or you slightly under performed. All those times that you came so close, but didn’t quite reach your goal, your dream. All those times that you worked pretty damn hard for something, but didn’t end up getting it. Well, Walter Sobchak would tell you that you need to exercise your will, because if you do that, well, you know the rest of the quote.

Walter’s message is one that definitely resonates with the many people who have come so close but not close enough. All you have to do is tell yourself “Yes I can. I can do this. I WILL do this!!” and, poof, all of your dreams will come true. Well, maybe not all of them, but a good deal. And I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying to yourself “I always work extra hard but I STILL don’t accomplish my goals”. Well, guess what, if you really worked as hard as you possibly could, if you really willed yourself to be the best that you could be, you would have accomplished those goals. If you think you’ve worked your absolute hardest, think again. It’s time to force yourself towards your goal, it’s time to flex your willpower

So remember, the next time that you say to yourself “I can’t do it”, think back to the wise words of Walter Sobchak. If you will it, it is no dream. If you push yourself to the absolute farthest that you can, there is nothing and no one that can stop you from accomplishing your every goal and dream.

Actually, Walter correctly attributes the quote to Theodor Herzl (twice) in the movie. Did you watch the film? There is nothing remotely brilliant anywhere in “The Big Lebowski”. The enduring appeal of this popcorn B movie resides solely in the giddy appeal of a character who smokes pot in public and says f**k every other word. Brilliant, indeed.

The quote which I reference is the one that Walter directs at the Dude. “If you will it, Dude, it is no dream.” Is it taken from Herzel. Yes. But those are Walter’s words, not Herzel’s. Oh, he says fuck every other word? Ever seen Pulp Fiction? Pretty sure the f-word is used as much if not more in that film, and it’s considered a classic. Maybe if you looked a little bit deeper than the dialogue and the fact that me main character smokes weed, you’d find that there are some incredibly interesting, humorous, and witty characters as well as an smart, enjoyable story.

      Thanks for stopping by

Great quote. What is funny is that Walter incorrectly attributes it to Lennin, when it was Theodore Hertzl. The misquote is a brilliant piece of writing by the Cohens.
